My Son has Fetal Valproate Syndrome a type of Fetal Anti Convulsant Syndrome (FACS) caused by Sodium valproate (Epilim, Depakote, Depakene) that I took while pregnant to control epilepsy. Despite the 40% risk of birth defects the UK medicine regulator (MHRA) is refusing to issue warnings. A group of people affected by the harmful side effects of pharmaceutical products held a peaceful protest on 2nd August 2013 at the MHRA Headquarters in London. http:// is linking people affected by all medications to build up a global campaign to raise awareness of poor medicine regulation. I have put a link to this page on the front page of the website. If you would like to get involved in our global campaign please email me and join the public facebook group (Fetal AntiConvulsant Trust) to discuss strategy and the development of the campaign. I look forward to hearing from you. thank you. emma friedmann

Methotrexate is given weekly as an intramuscular injection of 15 to 25 mg. Side effects are rare and include leukopenia and hypersensitivity interstitial pneumonitis. Hepatic fibrosis is the most severe potential sequela of long-term therapy. Patients with concomitant alcohol abuse and/or morbid obesity are more likely to develop hepatic fibrosis and therefore should not be treated with methotrexate. It is prudent to obtain a baseline chest radiograph and to monitor complete blood count, liver function and renal function every two weeks until the patient is receiving oral therapy, and every one to three months thereafter. Before methotrexate therapy is initiated, the risks of treatment and the possible need for a liver biopsy should be discussed with the patient.

A wide range of psychiatric reactions including affective disorders ( such as irritable, euphoric, depressed and labile mood, and suicidal thoughts), psychotic reactions (including mania, delusions, hallucinations and aggravation of schizophrenia), behavioural disturbances, irritability, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and cognitive dysfunction including confusion and amnesia have been reported. Reactions are common and may occur in both adults and children. In adults, the frequency of severe reactions have been estimated to be 5-6%. Psychological effects have been reported on withdrawal of corticosteroids; the frequency is unknown.

RAYOS was not formally evaluated for effects on reproduction. Published literature indicates prednisolone, the active metabolite of prednisone, has been shown to be teratogenic in rats, rabbits, hamsters, and mice with increased incidence of cleft palate in offspring. In teratogenicity studies, cleft palate along with elevation of fetal lethality (or increase in resorptions) and reductions in fetal body weight were seen in rats at maternal doses of 30 mg/kg (equivalent to 290 mg in a 60 kg individual based on mg/m² body surface comparison) and higher. Cleft palate was observed in mice at a maternal dose of 20 mg/kg (equivalent to 100 mg in a 60 kg individual based on mg/m² comparison). Additionally, constriction of the ductus arteriosus has been observed in fetuses of pregnant rats exposed to prednisolone.
